Contrary to the much popular belief, aloe vera is not a new discovery. In fact, it has been used as a healing plant for centuries. The aloe vera plant is also known by names such as Burn plant, Lily of the Desert and Elephant's Gall.
The plant is said to have originated in Sudan and have been recognized by many for its great properties. The plants needs warm and dry environment to grow. It is most commonly found in India and Africa. The plant most often doesn't have a stem and is a short stemmed plant. It normally grows to the height of 60-100 cm (24-39 in), while it can spread out wide. Take a closer look and you will see that the margin of the leaves have some tooth. It can grow both indoors as well as outdoors.
Not only is the thick and slimy pulp of this plant beneficial for skin, it has brilliant medicinal properties to aid digestion and even heal burns and cuts. Every leaf of the plant has gel, which includes vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
We all know that aloe vera juice has endless benefits, and that is precisely the reason why you will find it in every grocery store. Moreover, getting an aloe vera plant will only prove to be useful - its pulp and latex, both have umpteen benefits. Many people even prepare their own aloe vera juice and keep the pulp refrigerated for external application.
Heals burn
The gel of aloe vera is widely used to treat minor burns. It has topical application and is rubbed on affected areas. Its ointment can be used safely for first degree and second degree burns. It is expected to speed up the healing of burn injuries, however, the same cannot be said about wounds.
Good for dental health
In a recent study conducted on 300 people, aloe vera juice was pitted against chlorhexidine, a regular mouthwash ingredient to find out their efficacy. Aloe vera was found to be equally effective as the other mouth rinse. It helps cut down the build up of dental plaque.
Aids digestion
Having a teaspoon of aloe vera juice on empty stomach is said to aid digestion and help ease bowel movement. Most nutritionists these days recommend having aloe vera juice, as it also helps in weight loss. The compound polysaccharides present in aloe vera can cure many digestive disorders as well as ulcers. The latter is one of the most common result of digestive disorders.
Ease constipation
Aloe vera also helps treat constipation, however, it is not the pulpy gel but the latex that helps. Latex is the sticky residue under the leaf skin. The compound in latex that helps relieve constipation is called aloin. It can safely be used as a laxative.
Improves skin
Every second beauty product that you pick today will have aloe vera as an essential ingredient. Topical application of the aloe vera gel is said to reduce fine lines and hydrate the skin. It is also believed to have anti-ageing properties.
Reduces blood sugar levels
Traditionally, aloe vera was also used to treat diabetes. It is believed to aid blood sugar management and regulate insulin sensitivity in people suffering from diabetes.
Antibacterial
Aloe vera contains antioxidant, polyphenols. These can help prevent certain infections and curtail the growth of certain harmful bacteria.
Cures nausea
Not only to beat inflammation outside as well as inside, aloe vera is also said to cure nausea. This is especially useful for pregnant women, for whom nausea is one of the biggest pregnancy challenges.
However, there are many varieties of aloe vera juice that come readily packed. Make sure you pick only the trusted variety (and brand) and keep a check on its expiry date.

A high-calorie food may be key for keeping weight gain in check: People who eat more nuts are less likely to become overweight or obese, a new study in the European Journal of Nutrition finds.
In the study, researchers evaluated the diets of more than 373,000 adults from 10 European countries, and then followed them up for five years to see how their weight changed.
On average, the participants gained about four and a half pounds over the five-year period. But those who ate the most nuts a day—more than six grams, averaging about 12 grams a day—gained significantly less weight than those who didn’t eat any nuts at all.
In fact, for each additional 15 grams of nuts per day they ate, the experienced about a 2.5 percent reduction in body weight increase, the researchers say.
What’s more, those who ate at least six grams of nuts a day were five percent less likely to become overweight or obese by the time the study ended.
The results seen when looking at absolute consumption of nuts was pretty small, but they became more noticeable when looking at frequency of how often people ate them instead. People who ate nuts at least once a week had a 10 percent lower body weight increase, the study found.
The link between less weight gain and nut consumption persisted even after the researchers adjusted for dietary quality—meaning, it wasn’t just that nut consumers ate better diets overall, but that there does seem to be something specific about the nuts that helps ward off weight gain.
So how can nuts be protective for your waistline? Seems counterintuitive, since they are a calorie-dense snack. Each one-ounce serving of walnuts (28 grams), for instance, contains 180 calories. That’s just 14 walnut halves. (Want to learn how to eat to maintain muscle and lose fat? Check out the Metashred Diet from Men’s Health.)
But they can help keep your weight in check for a few reasons: First, their combo of fiber and protein can help keep you full for longer. Their unsaturated fat and protein content can also help you burn more calories at rest, the researchers say. Plus, the way you chew nuts allows for a low level of fat absorption, possibly meaning you take in less energy from them.
So don’t be afraid to add these high-calorie options to your diet: Just portion them out beforehand so you’re not taking in more than you think. If you’re not careful—say, you eat your nuts straight from the can or bag—you can easily eat way more than a serving.

The Sky Habitat Development Features Beautiful Sky Gardens
Sky Habitat is a towering residential complex, located in the Bishan district of Singapore, that takes its inspiration from ancient hillside dwellings and more modern structures like architect Moshe Safdie's Habitat 67 complex in Montreal.
The structure features gorgeous sky gardens that elevate the residential appearance. As far as apartments are concerned, there are 509, with each boasting multiple orientations as well as private outdoor spaces. Indeed the Sky Habitat's structure ably fuses balconies, terraces and gardens. The development features two buildings that are linked together via a trio of platforms that help to ventilate the buildings and provide recreational space.
Everything about the Sky Habitat's design aims to add some green character to the residential tower, something that can seem all too grey and drab in an urban jungle like Singapore.
With Local Gardeners, Strongbow Created a Green Space in the City
Most people who spend their lives surrounded by concrete in an urban environment have a huge appreciation for green space in the city. In order to bring vibrant greenery to an area that lacked it, Strongbow teamed up with a group of Gorilla Gardeners to liven up an abandoned area in Johannesburg, South Africa. This 'Nature Remixed' intervention involved creating an orchard, which is now a peaceful oasis where apples trees will grow in the city.
Beyond its role as a producer of apple ciders, Strongbow is on a global mission to bring more nature into urban settings and all the while, enrich communities, cultures and public spaces.
As well as being able to see Strongbow's first initiative mapped on its website, the brand lists other inspiring examples of how derelict spaces are being transformed with nature.
The Horti Hood Provides a Temporary Hothouse For Maximum Plant Growth
The Horti Hood Pop-Up Greenhouse is an asset to consumers looking to utilize a hothouse to grow plants, but don't necessarily have the space or access to a full sized one. The Horti Hood provides a foldable and compact plastic material curved dome that simulates the same insulated experience of a hothouse, with a portable design that can be set up temporarily in no time at all.
Greenhouses are often used to mass-produce plants, fruits and vegetables by elevating the temporal environment and the Horti Hood provides the same heated quality with a UV-stable PVC structure. The plastic exterior locks heat from the sun in by creating a sealed small space area for gardeners to keep their plants inside. The portable design is ideal for small rooftops, balconies or backyards.
The San Diego Padres' Pepper Garden Grows Ingredients for Ballpark Dishes
While it's a feat in and of itself to have a pepper garden that grows some of the hottest peppers in the world, what truly makes this plot unique is its location. This organic pepper garden is not just situated in the San Diego Padres' home turf, it has a prime spot in the bullpen of the Petco Park. Last season, Luke Yoder, Petco Park’s director of field operations experimented with 18 pepper varieties from 15 countries that are now used in ballpark dishes.
While peppers are best suited for growing in warm summer weather, at other times of the year, Yoder has experimented with everything from avocados to blueberries, carrots and pomegranates. However unconventional, this inventive use of space yields plenty of crowd-pleasing additions to salsas, burgers, tacos and other stadium food snacks year-round.
Fenway Farms' is Built on the Roof of Boston's Historic Fenway Park
'Fenway Farms' is a lush vegetable garden built on the roof of Boston's historic Fenway Park. Despite being the oldest baseball stadium in the country, Fenway Park has found an innovative way to stay current, capitalizing on the urban garden food craze happening across the world.
Fenway farms was built and launched in time for the 2015 season, providing fresh, organically grown vegetables and fruits at the park’s EMC Club restaurant. The rooftop garden was made possible with the help of Green City Growers, a Boston-based organization that converts unused space into vibrant farms.
The popularity of Fenway Farms speaks to an existing pattern of urban rooftop farms that sees city dwellers planting and harvesting their own fruits and vegetables. Also, with a more health-conscious fan base emerging, fresh local produce may even replace junk food at ballpark concession stands in the future.
Vancouver Central Library's Top Floor Will be a Green Space Community
Vancouver's Central Library is undergoing a massive environmentally friendly remodelling to transform the library rooftop into a large community green space that can be used for a variety of communal activities. The space will offer one of the largest open green roofs in the community that can be used during the day and at night.
The Central Library is one of the main hubs of the west coast city, dedicating various floors to books and provincial government offices. The space will increase its layout by transforming the rooftop into a green space that will extend the layout by 40,000-square feet and offer an outdoor auditorium, outdoor gallery space, meeting rooms and a reading area. The space will also provide a public garden that will help to naturally reduce the effect of the city's carbon emissions.
This Environmentally Friendly Park Will Be in Downtown Los Angeles
This sustainable park design will be built in downtown LA as an extension to the already existing Grand Park.
Known as 'FAB Park,' this park will be built with the intention of bringing together employees, locals and tourists. It is a celebration of LA's diversity and will represent the city with "food, art and land." The park will be surrounded by trees, have a beer garden, a restaurant and canopies for shade. The shade canopies will also function as solar panels for this sustainable park and the restaurant will be designed with rooftop vegetation. The architects hope to strive for a "net-zero energy rating and to handle all onsite storm water capture, treatment and infiltration."
The innovative design of this park coupled with its sustainable components will make a beautiful extension to the area.
This Initiative Uses Plants to Combat Rising Temperature
The city of Madrid, Spain, has embarked on a unique project that involves covering the city in plants in order to combat rising temperatures. As the effects of climate change become increasingly apparent, cities such as Madrid face challenges such as drought, floods and blisteringly hot days. Now the city is trying to adapt to these challenges by turning to nature.
Put simply, the new initiative involves covering the entire city in as much greenery as possible. Not only is the city expanding its existing parks, but it is also turning unused spaces such as vacant lots into urban gardens and adding greenery to rooftops. There are even plans to fix plants to outdoor walls to help insulate buildings and reduce noise pollution. Another benefit of the added greenery is lower temperatures because the plants release evaporated water that can produce clouds.
The initiative demonstrates one of the ways that cities are trying to combat rising temperatures and adapt to a changing global climate.
This Urban Garden Design Uses Indian Water Mazes as Its Inspiration
This massive urban garden design by Penda is located in Hyderabad, India and will be used to provide nearby residents with a beautiful communal space.
Penda uses Indian rectangular pools and decorative mazes as inspiration for the project, combining the two for a pyramid-like garden. With this shape, people can walk up and down each levels admiring the flowers and different plants that will be there and find a space of their own to relax in. The urban garden design will function as a place for people to sit with friends and neighbors, walk their dogs and enjoy the outdoors.
The garden maze will have three different routes in order to offer different spaces for certain activities. These will include a wide path, a narrow path, and a longer path that winds around the area.
This Backyard Hideaway Was Designed to Get Away from the Busy City
This relaxing garden getaway designed by Hunt Architecture was made for a client who wanted to get away from the busy New York streets. Built in the backyard of a Brooklyn town home, the small studio can only hold a few items, including two chairs and a small table or a larger lounging space without furniture.
This structure bridges the gap between the outdoors and indoors, allowing for an abundance of natural light through a skylight and windows. The door can also be left open to let the breeze in. The studio is made from wood with white walls draping the interior. Although situated in the backyard, the private sanctuary only takes up a small portion and leaves the homeowner with plenty of green space surrounding it.
The Kaohsiung Train Station in Taiwan is Covered by a Lush Garden
Mass public transit is a green, environmentally friendly mode of transportation on its own, and now Dutch firm Mecanoo Architecten is taking that concept to the extreme with a literally green train station. Like Grand Central or Tokyo Station, Kaohsiung Station will be the hub of the Taiwanese underground -- but, above ground, it will be lush with a verdant garden and park system.
The complete project consists of three layers: at bottom, the train station will carry more than 40,000 passengers daily. Above that is a sleek, open plaza with a skylight and wrap-around windows to maximize natural light access. Finally, on top will be the open air garden which will function as both a park and bicycle path.
The green train station will occupy 8.5 hectares within central Kaohsiung.

The 'Milkshake Tree' is an inventive pop-up garden that's been set up in London's Greenwich Peninsula for this year's Festival of Architecture. The installation by pH+ architects was inspired by a collaboration with the London Centre for Children with Cerebral Palsy (LCCCP) and encourages play through sensorial exploration. While The Milkshake Tree offers a more sophisticated look than most other structures that are built for children, the pop-up garden features copper xylophones that can be played, a central mirrored cube and a prism that creates a kaleidoscope effect.
Following the London Festival of Architecture 2016, The Milkshake will be relocated to its new home at the LCCCP in North London.
The Milkshake Tree gets its unusual name from a child who suggested that they wanted a "milkshake tree" at the new LCCCP playground.
The URBNSURF Wave Pool Offers Public Surfing With a Simulated Beach
The URBNSURF are a series of urban surf parks located throughout the Australian coasts in areas such as Melbourne and Sydney that allow consumers an alternative area to surf from the beach. The construction features a simulated ocean with realistic waves allowing those that live in a metropolis access to comparable surfing conditions without having to trek to the coast.
Each of the URBNSURF locations are designed to be of equal caliber to the beach and offer consumers waves that they would experience if they were at the ocean. The waves are recreated using Wavegarden technology that produces swells as large as five and a half feet for pro surfers and smaller, easier to catch waves at less than two feet. The experience offers an alternative place to enjoy the sport that is less crowded and equally as good.
This Winding Pathway is Meant to Be a Reminder for Preserving Water
Penda's winding pathway design has been chosen as the winner for 10th international Garden Expo in Wuhan, China. The landscape pavilion seeks to remind people of the importance of the preservation of water through its river-like shape. Each person who visits the landscape will be given seeds to plant wherever they wish. The seeds on the path essentially replace water with growing greens to bring the landscape to life.
The pavilion's winding path will also feature hills and valleys, another ode to surrounding natural elements. Water however, remains the true inspiration. Designers believe that water is the connecting system throughout the world and a precious resource. The challenge of the project was making something that promoted this message, without the actual use of water. The connection of water is also a reference to the city of Wuhan, which is in close proximity to the Yangtze River.
OYO Architects Creates a Modern Green Belgium House
There are a lot of interesting details about this Belgium house, but the standout feature has to be its slanted roof. Aren't many roofs slanted, you ask? Yes, they are, But not many of them slant straight into the ground covered entirely in grass as though it were straight out of a Hobbits home from "Lord of the Rings."
Designed by OYO architects, the Belgium house integrates nature beautifully into its overall design. Full of geometric lines that are echoed inside, it rethinks the exterior of such abodes in a big way. People will gladly incorporate more greenery into their daily lives if it meant enjoying a home like this one. The use of warm materials inside the Belgium house is incredibly welcoming for both residents and guests.
The Shenye TaiRan Building Boasts Stunning "Secret" Gardens
The Shenye TaiRan Building may look like a typical corporate structure from the ground level. But soar above it in a plane or helicopter and it's clear that there's more to it than first meets the eye. The rooftops boasts stunning landscaped terraces that provide those working in the building with a refreshing getaway when the stress of life gets to be a bit much.
Designed by ZHUBO DESIGN, the Shenye TaiRan Building's gardens are private, but in a way they
might as well be described romantically as secret. With lush foliage, walking paths and curved benches, it's like something straight out of a novel. The Shenye TaiRan Building is located in Shenzhen, China. Yet perhaps similar architecture will be found in other parts of the world soon. The Eco Barge Cruises the Danube in a Sustainable Fashion
Instead of focusing on making the land greener like many environmental activists, ecologically conscious design firm Salt & Water is attempting to make the water greener with the Eco Barge. Designed to float along the Danube river in Belgrade, Serbia, the Eco Barge comprises a small greenhouse and hut on which urban farmers can grow organic produce.
Powered exclusively with solar panels and miniature wind turbines, the barge emits no greenhouse gasses while simultaneously emitting plentiful greenhouse fruits, vegetables and plants.
The Eco Barge is also intended as a place for urban farming workshops. Its mobility allows the operator to move the barge to different points along the waterway, picking up tutees and teaching them about vertical gardens, irrigation systems and more.
The Hyperions Project Would See a Sustainable Food System Grow on Dwellings
The development of new sustainable food systems is imperative to ensure modern life can continue on out planet, so the Hyperions project is designed to bring the process home (literally).
Incorporating garden space, lush green foliage and a biophilic design aesthetic, the Hyperions building would act as a self-sustaining building, essentially. Designed by Vincent Callebaut architects, the Hyperions project would see the building produce ample fresh foods for inhabitants to enjoy direct from the source.
Modern food chains are based on factory farming and extensive infrastructure to ship the goods worldwide. As the need for a more sustainable food system intensifies, conceptual buildings like the Hyperions project sees food chains go back to their beginnings. The growth of food on-site would help to decrease emissions, waste and use of pesticides/herbicides.
This City Garden is Interactive and Incorporates Different Designs
This city garden was designed by OFL Architecture to bring an interactive green area to a downtown setting.
The garden was inspired by honeycombs and consists of several hexagonal shapes that are made up of either wood or soil and plants. Small stools are dispersed throughout the city garden that are also shaped as hexagons and the garden's tall red structures are luminescent and play music. The ability to sit, observe, listen and play in this area makes this garden an interactive environment that people of all ages can enjoy and that brings a natural escape to an urban setting.
This hexagon-shaped garden derives beautiful elements of nature to create a space for urban dwellers to relax in.
Plant-a-Bar' Outdoor Bars Create a Garden Space at Drink Level
Crafted from reclaimed lumber and finished with rustic hardware, 'Plant-a-Bar' outdoor bars are designed to put a garden at drink level to enhance the aesthetic of a space. Coming in several different size options, 'Plant-a-Bar' bars are constructed in Vermont from quality materials for a more eco-friendly aesthetic overall.
The bars can be used in urban or rural environments as a way to plant fresh herbs and spices. This in turn could develop into a welcome idea for those that want to craft their own cocktails using fresh ingredients from their very own bar. As urban consumers seek out ways to incorporate fresher ingredients into their diets, 'Plant-a-Bar' outdoor bars offer a compact way to grow fruits, veggies and more.
This Empty Storefront Was Transformed into a Tranquil Temporary Venue
PopinnPark is a pop-up garden oasis located in the heart of East Amsterdam on high street. The tranquil temporary venue is situated within an empty shopfront that was formerly a clothing boutique but that closed last year. The charming garden oasis hopes is designed with the hopes of creating a public platform for green entrepreneurs to meet, interact and collaborate.
The first of its kind in Europe, the park was founded by two entrepreneurs who spent two years searching for the perfect host venue. Formerly a movie theater, the building will be demolished in the future to make way for new residential developments. The quaint pop-up park features picnic tables, swing sets and a playground as a creative means of breaking the ice between mingling guests.
This Concept House Features a Rooftop Vegetable Garden and Solar Heating
The Concept House Institute of Building and Business Administration house -- also known as the CHiBB house for the sake of brevity -- is an exceptionally unique and wonderfully sustainable house that is effectively a massive, over-sized greenhouse. This particular home will serve as a living space and home for Dutch stylist Helly Scholten and her family for a period of three years, and is designed to make it possible to explore new sustainable living methods.
This particular concept house features a large glazed area on the top as well as a rooftop vegetable garden. The home's temperature cam only be controlled by opening specially operable windows, while a solar-powered water heating system allows the home's occupants to enjoy hot water.
Ultimately, the CHiBB house is a worthwhile and important experiment into seeing how far sustainable living methods can be pushed.
This Piezoelectric Architecture Merges Design & Sustainability
Belgrade has one of the largest trolleybus infrastructures in Europe, which spans the entire city. This project is a design for a combined trolleybus terminal and public garden; the building uses piezoelectric cells positioned within the main body of the helix structure to generate electrical energy. When subjected to mechanical strain, this vibrational-energy harvesting uses the displacement of piezoelectric crystals which are deformed by wind, pressure exerted from trolleybus pulses and kinetic movement from the overhead infrastructure wires to generate a current. The piezoelectric cells are stacked within the terminal's folded cross section, further increasing the vibration within the structure. A cluster of conducting wires are suspended from the terminal's helix frame, and they connect directly to the overhead trolleybus wire infrastructure which serves the entire city. These wires create a breathing atrium that reverberates with wind and rain, amplifying the electrical output from the building. The architecture has become part of the infrastructure.
The design generates enough electrical output for street lighting and Internet WiFi access to immediate neighborhoods. The building is an active adaptive power port through which commuters will be able to charge mobiles, laptops and smart cars at these trolleybus station gardens. The generated electric current will be used to stimulate plant roots for plant growth within the main body of the structure, and the park next to the terminal has its own irrigation and sprinklers powered by the trolleybus terminal.
The project follows the Piezoelectric playground designed in 2008 for the Piorinski Park, Belgrade. The architecture advocates a dialogue between architectural form, geometry, sustainability and smart materials as an inherent part of the design process, dictating the terms of the architectural design criteria rather than referring to sustainable technology as a polite afterthought.
