Take the milk route to health
Most of us know that milk is good for health, but we may not be aware of its many benefits and its wonderful composition that is full of flavour and goodness. It is often called the complete food as it contains high quality proteins and vitamins, especially A, B2 and D, fat and calcium.
The chief proteins, case in and lactalbumin is especially needed for children, during their growth period. One of the things it lacks is Vitamin C, which is why infants are given fruit juice supplements. Also, though it is rich in phosphorous, it is low in iron.
Milk is most easily digestible drink that can be assimilated by the body, giving us strength, improving our memory and promoting longevity. It has therapeutic values too, as it cures peptic ulcer, hyperacidity and heartburn.
To get relief from constipation, drink a glass of hot milk with 2 tsps of ghee at bedtime. A small quantity of milk, taken three or four times a day, can soothe a heartburn. For gastric ulcers, it is best to boil a few raisins and drink them with a glass of milk two to three times a day.
For common cold, a glass of hot milk with ¼ tsp of turmeric powder and a pinch of black pepper powder is a good cure. As a first aid measure, it is believed that applying milk on burns prevents blisters in some minor burns.
As a cosmetic aid, milk cream with a pinch of turmeric powder, lime juice and rose water, helps to soften the texture of the skin. The ideal way to retain the nutritional value is, to boil milk and cool immediately in a bowl of water to distribute its fats evenly. Always keep it covered as exposure to light depletes its Vitamin A, riboflavin and other nutrients.
