The Dark Tower, Sony and MRC's adaptation of the Stephen King fantasy novels, landed $1.8 million in previews Thursday night. Kathryn Bigelow's Detroit, expanding wide this weekend, earned $525,000 while Halle Berry starrer Kidnap grabbed $500,000 in previews.
,dark tower, starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, is expected to top the domestic box office this weekend with insiders estimating a debut in the $20 million range (Sony is estimating a more conservative opening in the high teens).
In the film, Elba plays a gunslinger who is determined to hunt down his nemesis, the Man in Black (McConaughey), and protect the Dark Tower, a powerful structure that protects the world from darkness.

is also opening wide this weekend, expanding into more than 2,800 theaters after opening in select theaters last weekend.
The film, the first release from Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures under its own distribution label, is tracking to earn in the $13 million range. Recounting the Detroit riots of 1967, the film stars John Boyega, Will Poulter, Algee Smith, Jason Mitchell, Jack Reynor and Anthony Mackie. The script was written by Bigelow’s longtime collaborator Mark Boal.
Kidnap, an indie action pic starring Halle Berry that was originally set to be released by Relativity Media, also opens wide this weekend.
The project, about a mother who will stop at nothing to get her kidnapped son back, is tracking to earn in the $8 million range. David Dinerstein's new distribution outfit, Aviron, is handling the title. Luis Prieto directed the film.
