The Ya Gu Quan Shan Hotel in Hangzhou, China, is architecturally inspired by traditional local practices. Nestled into a remote region between hills and plentiful foliage, the hotel eschews the typically upward building style of modern hotels in favor of the horizontal emphasis of ancient Chinese architecture, thus allowing it to better blend in with nature.

Though Ya Gu Quan Shan Hotel is a modern building with all the amenities of a great hotel, it sticks to the traits of traditional Chinese architecture. It adheres to bilateral symmetry in both individual buildings and in the layout of the entire complex (as much as topology allows,) it has an open courtyard with a Chinese garden, and several of its buildings employ a traditional "sky well", which is an interior, roofless courtyard.
