George King Architects has proposed a new sculptural walkway to be built outside the ruins of the historic Flint Castle, and the design is rankling the ire of locals. The sculpture is a massive ring made of iron, and its reference to the history of the region is potentially offensive to the Welsh people, who see it as a sign of subjugation.

At the turn of the 14th century, Edward the First of England built Flint Castle and others around the perimeter of Wales. He called these castles the "Iron Ring," and their intention was to keep the Welsh locals from raising any resistance. George King's sculpture is indeed an explicit reference to this medieval history, and as such it is a highly controversial subject.
