10 Best Racing Games for Android

September 19, 2017

1 Asphalt 8: Airborne

Our first pick and still my favorite racing game to date comes from Gameloft, who has now released eight versions of their flagship racing game for Android. Asphalt 8: Airborne does away with all the simulator realism and goes for high speeds and octane boosters. All while flying down realistic streets with natural lighting, shadows, and reflection. And you can't forget the jumps and tricks. All of this is done while having some of the best graphics on a mobile device.

Asphalt 8 delivers realistic crashes and extensive vehicle damage. You'll enjoy both arcade and multiplayer modes, and the career mode is even better. Build a reputation and become the best racer. This has been my favorite game since its release, and Asphalt 7 is still a close second. It's my go-to mobile game to show off how far mobile gaming has come.

Driver Speedboat Paradise

A newcomer to our list but arguably one of the best aquatic racing games of last year is Driver: Speedboat Paradise. Made by the popular PC developers Ubisoft. It's similar to Riptide GP2, which is next on our list, only is much better and actually has a storyline to go with the great gameplay and stunning graphics.

You are a young and reckless driver that speeds through deep waters in multiple exotic locations against other drivers, fighting the Mafia, meeting cops and unlocking different customization tools to create your very own speedboat. It has 6 different modes, including drag racing and multiplayer options, and you can even race against your friends. I've been enjoying this game on my Nexus 9 tablet.

Racing Rivals

For a long time this slide was reserved for Riptide GP2, as it's one of the best racing games around. Flying through the water on a high-powered jetski. However, that game is starting to show its age, and it's time to highlight something else.

Enter Racing Rivals. This is from the popular developers at GLU Mobile, and with well over 10 million downloads and thousands of reviews, it's worth a quick look. While it does have in-app ads, it's still extremely fun to race against live opponents. This is true high-speed real time racing right at your fingertips. With high stakes betting, weekly events and tons of officially licensed cars, everyone can enjoy this title. Although, you may get frustrated by losing too much. Work on those thumb skills and precision turns, and you'll get the hang of it, start winning and betting more.

Slingshot Racing

The first few games listed are very normal yet popular arcade-style games. So, try something different like Slingshot Racing. This unique game will keep you busy, excited, but can also be frustrating until you master the craft of the slingshot move. Slingshot racing takes a little skill, practice, and a light touch to get right. Once you do, you'll be the fastest racer around.

It's hard to explain, but you'll need to tap to "slingshot" your car around corners and it's all about timing and finding a groove as you speed past the competition. It's a racing game designed for touchscreen devices, so you can't use a controller like the three mentioned above, but it's extremely fun and addicting. You can paint and customize your car, and then start slinging.

Beach Buggy Blitz

From the same developers as the award-winning Riptide GP2 game mentioned earlier comes another impressive game called Beach Buggy Blitz. It has a similar feel, but you'll be flying around beaches, through tunnels and over or under bridges in some sweet dune-buggy cruisers.

"Drive your hot-rod beach buggy as far as you can into the uncharted depths of a mysterious tropical island!"

Extreme Car Driving Simulator

Released in late 2014 Extreme Car Driving Simulator is still one of the better racing games for Android as we didn't see too many titles arrive in late 2015. It features multiple viewing angles of your supercars, a realistic heads-up-display for MPH and more. They've recently updated the game with mini games and competitions, racing through traffic, and more.

You'll be racing some of the world's most expensive cars in an open real-world enviornment, cars will show damage as you wreck (and you will) not to mention some neat physics and life-like racing experience. This one has over 230,000 5-star reviews, and is completely free.

Traffic Racer

Traffic Racer is a game we've seen before, but it's extremely fun, frustrating, and pretty difficult. At the same time, you'll spend hours playing it. Drive your car through highway traffic, compete with others, avoid obstacles and reach the destination safely. It contains 5 game modes and 27 different cars to choose from. You can drive through deserts, suburbs, snowy streets and city lights, and be the fastest driver in the world. If you're good enough.

Real Racing 3

We've covered arcade and casual games, so now lets get into something more technical and realistic. Real Racing 3 is one of the best actual simulators available, but it's starting to show its age. This is the third release in this iconic mobile racing game, and one you'll want to try if you enjoy simulator racing games.

Fast & Furious: Legacy

Fast & Furious: Legacy is a realistic drag-racing game that draws inspiration from and was released alongside the new Fast 7 movie. This is another extremely fun game that's filled with in-app purchases.

Need for Speed: No Limits

While games like Angry Birds Go, Shine Runner or CSR Racing made our lists in previous years, lots of other games are now available to take their place.

Last but not least is the latest title in the long-standing Need for Speed franchise. It's called Need for Speed: No Limits, and it's bar-none one of the most beautiful racing games for Android. It looks even better with a NVIDIA powered tablet, like my Pixel C. Need for Speed: Most Wanted is good too, just old.

10 Greatest International Batsmen Of All Time

September 16, 2017

1. Don Bradman (Australia)

Tests- 52, Runs- 6996, Average- 99.94, 100s- 29, Highest Score- 334

The Great Don. Finishing with an average that has become the most well-known sports record, Bradman’s aura made him a benchmark in the world of cricket, with every other legendary batsman being measured against this charismatic Australian.
By transcending the game that he played, Bradman achieved the pinnacles in the world of sports with his superhuman stats, stamping himself as the epitome of human success.

2. Sachin Tendulkar (India)

Tests- 188, Runs- 15470, Average- 55.44, 100s- 51, Highest Score- 248*

He was India’s saviour, the go-to man when in distress. Solely shouldering the responsibility of the mass Indian population for two and a half decades, Tendulkar’s greatness lay beyond the record books and his logic-defying consistency.
As the years and decades rolled by, Tendulkar, who had faced Wasim and Waqar in Faisalabad as a shy sixteen year old, started stamping his authority in every country, against every bowler, soon becoming his nation’s identity and pride.
The colossal Tendulkar defied Akhtar’s pace and Warne’s wizardry with élan, emerging as one of the greatest that the world has witnessed. Better than ‘The Don’? The jury is still out on that one!

3. Sir Jack Hobbs (England)

Tests- 61, Runs- 5410, Average- 56.94, 100s- 15, Highest Score- 211

The original ‘Master’ of cricket, Hobbs was a pioneer of the sport, introducing a number of shots to his armory. Sans professional coaching, Hobbs was the first batsman to average over 50 in Test cricket and the first cricketer to be knighted by the Queen. With 199 centuries in competitive cricket and seven Test centuries after the age of forty, including a hundred at 46, Sir Hobbs remains a pivotal influence for modern-day batsmen.

4. Sir Walter Hammond (England)

Tests- 85, Runs- 7249, Average- 58.45, 100s- 22, Highest Score- 336*

Sir Walter Hammond’s greatness can be summed up by the fact that he was constantly compared and contrasted with Don as the greatest batsman of the pre-war era. Sharing a parallel career with Bradman, Hammond shared a riveting rivalry with the Australian, especially after he broke his world record by scoring 336 runs, the highest individual Test score.
Widely accepted as England’s best batsman with 22 centuries, which was only recently overhauled by Alastair Cook, Hammond held the world record for the most Test runs at the time of his retirement.

5. Brian Lara (West Indies)

Tests- 131, Runs- 11953, Average- 52.28, 100s- 34, Highest Score- 400*

Faced with the uphill task of reviving the fortunes of West Indian cricket after it had threatened to plunge into the abyss, Brian Lara had the dual duty of replicating the brilliance that had been set by the likes of Sobers, Richards and George Headley.
Following in the footsteps of his proven compatriots, Lara not only matched them with his consistent display of scores but also carved a niche for himself away from their shadows.
Ending his career with two first-class scores in excess of 400, the Trinidadian provided the audience with a glimpse of the power that West Indies cricket once boasted of.

6. Sir Garfield Sobers (West Indies)

Tests- 93, Runs- 8032, Average- 57.78, 100s- 26, Highest Score- 365*

Combing an envious batting technique with the unmistakable brash Caribbean flair, Sir Garfield Sobers remains the greatest all-rounder to have played the game. The left hander, who was as proficient on the off-side as he was while picking up his 235 wickets, was the first batsman in history to hit six sixes in an over against Malcolm Nash.
Holding the world record for the highest individual score in Tests after he scored 365 in just his fourteenth match, Sobers stood out from the West Indian team of legends who would go on to conquer the cricketing arena in the upcoming decade.

7. Jacques Kallis (South Africa)

Tests- 150, Runs- 12260, Average- 57.02, 100s- 41, Highest Score- 224

“If world cricket was a museum and all the cricketers were priceless artworks, then Jacques Kallis would be this museum’s Mona Lisa—priceless and one in a billion.” This quote aptly sums up the aura of Jacques Kallis, the most consistent, beyond perfect all-rounder that the world has seen. With a fixed determination that warded off all distractions, Kallis was awarded with the most man-of-the-match awards in the history of Test cricket.
He remained a delight to the eyes, the classical and conventional unsung hero, whose feats often got lost in the midst of Ponting’s aggression or Tendulkar’s divinity.

8. Sir Vivian Richards (West Indies)

Tests- 121, Runs- 8540, Average- 50.23, 100s- 24, Highest Score- 291

Viv Richards, with his inane tendency to thwart the bowling attack all over the park, earmarked a name for himself as the most intimidating and dominating batsman that the bowlers had faced, long before the likes of Sehwag and Gilchrist entered the arena. With pitch perfect timing and an attitude that exuded gallons of confidence, the batsman from the Caribbean, till date, is counted as the most feared cricketer of all generations.

9. Sunil Gavaskar (India)

Tests- 125, Runs- 10122, Average- 51.12, 100s- 34, Highest Score- 236

Long before Tendulkar captured the imagination of the Indian sphere, Gavaskar treaded the path to stardom; inspiring a nation to rub shoulders with the giants in the game. The first player to score 10,000 Test runs, Gavaskar’s mode of play centered on a near flawless technique with unmatched concentration levels.
They say, to be the best, one has to have high standards against the best in the business, an area where Gavaskar flourished in. 2749 runs at an average of 65 with thirteen centuries against the mighty West Indies of the 70s and 80s, also dubbed as the ‘Best Team to Have Ever Played Test Cricket’, tells its own tale.

10. Greg Chappell (Australia)

Tests- 87, Runs- 7110, Average- 53.86, 100s- 24, Highest Score- 247*

Missing two years of international cricket, after joining the rebel World Series Cricket, might have prevented him from being called Australia’s best batsman after Bradman, but Greg Chappell with awe-dropping records still makes it to our list of the Top 10 Batsmen of All Time, piping Ricky Ponting.
Playing against bowlers like Michael Holding, Colin Croft and Joel Garner, Chappell remained a hostile competitor, setting the stage for an aggressive breed of Australian players who would go on to reign world cricket.

Top 10 Unsolved Mysteries of Science

September 16, 2017

1 Why is there more matter than antimatter?

According to our current understanding of particle physics, matter and antimatter are equal but opposite. When they meet, they should destroy one another and leave nothing left over, and most of those annihilations should have occurred early in the Universe. However, there was enough matter left over to make the billions and billions of galaxies, stars, planets, and everything else. Various explanations surround mesons, which are short-lived subatomic particles made of one quark and one antiquark. B-mesons decay more slowly than anti-B-mesons, which could have resulted in enough B-mesons surviving the interaction to create all of the matter in the Universe. Additionally, B-, D-, and K-mesons can oscillate and become antiparticles and then back again. Studies have suggested that mesons are more likely to assume the normal state, which may also be why regular particles outnumber antiparticles.

2 Where is all the lithium?

Early in the Universe when temperatures were incredibly high, isotopes of hydrogen, helium, and lithium were synthesized in abundance. Hydrogen and helium are still incredibly abundant and make up nearly all of the mass in the Universe, though there is only about a third of the lithium-7 that we should see. There are a wide variety of explanations for why this might have happened, including some hypotheses involving hypothetical bosons known as axions, and others believe it is trapped in the core of stars, which our current telescopes and instruments can’t detect. However, there are currently no clear front running theories to explain this absence of lithium in the Universe.

3 Why do we sleep?

While we do know that the human body is regulated by a circadian clock that keeps humans on a sleep/wake cycle, we don’t really know why. Sleep is the time when our bodies repair tissues and perform other maintenance activities, and we spend nearly a third of our lives snoozing. Some other organisms don’t need to sleep at all, so why do we? There are a few different ideas out there, but none seem to solidly answer the question. Some theorize that animals who are able to sleep have evolved the ability to hide from predators, while others who need to remain more alert are able to rest and regenerate in other ways without fully going to sleep. While scientists don’t quite know why we do it, they are starting to learn more about why it is important, and how sleep impacts important things like brain plasticity.

4 How does gravity work?

We all know that gravity from the moon causes tides, Earth’s gravity holds us to the surface, and the sun’s gravity keeps our planet in orbit, but how much do we really understand it? This powerful force is generated from matter, and more massive objects therefore have a greater ability to attract other objects. While scientists do understand a great deal about how gravity acts, they aren’t really sure why it exists. Why are atoms mostly empty space? Why is the force that holds atoms together different from gravity? Is gravity actually a particle? These are answers that we really just can’t answer with our current understand of physics.

5 Where is everyone?

The observable Universe is 92 billion light-years in diameter, filled with billions of galaxies with stars and planets, yet the only evidence of any life anywhere is right here on Earth. Statistically, the odds of us actually being the only living beings in the Universe are impossibly low, so why the hell haven’t we connected with anyone else yet? This is known as the Fermi Paradox, and there have been dozens of suggestions to explain why we haven’t encountered extraterrestrial life; some more plausible than others. We could probably talk about all of the different possibilities for days about whether or not we’re just missing signals, if they’ve actually been here and we didn’t know it, they can’t/don’t want to talk to us, or—the extremely unlikely scenario—if Earth is the only planet with life ever.

6 What is dark matter made of?

About 80% of all mass in the Universe is made of dark matter. Dark matter is pretty peculiar stuff, as it doesn’t emit any light. Though it was first theorized about 60 years ago, there isn’t any direct evidence of its existence. Many scientists believe dark matter is comprised of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), which could be up to 100 times more massive than a proton, but doesn’t readily interact with the baryonic matter our instruments were designed to detect. Other candidates for dark matter’s composition include axions, neutralinos, and photinos.

7 How did life begin?

Where did life on Earth come from? How did it happen? Those who believe in the Primordial Soup model believe that a nutrient-rich early Earth eventually formed increasingly-complex molecules that gave rise to life. This could have taken place in the deep ocean vents, in clay, or under ice. Different models also give variable levels of importance to the presence of lightning or volcanic activity for the spawn of life. While DNA is the predominant basis for life on Earth now, it has been suggested that RNA could have dominated the first lifeforms. Additionally, other scientists question whether other nucleic acids aside from RNA or DNA may have once existed. Did life spawn just once, or is it possible that is was created, wiped out, and then restarted? Some believe in panspermia, in which microbial life was brought to Earth via meteorites or comets. Even if that is true, it doesn’t answer the question of how that life originated.

8 How do plate tectonics work?

It might sound surprising, but the theory of continental plates moving around, rearranging continents and causing earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and even forming mountains, has only received widespread support relatively recently. Though it was first postulated back around 1500 that the continents may have once fit together (it’s not really a stretch for anyone who has looked at a map), the idea didn’t gain a lot of traction until the 1960s when the hypothesis of sea-floor spreading, where rocks are pulled into the mantle of the Earth, recycled, and brought back to the surface as magma, was backed up by physical evidence. However, scientists aren’t entirely sure on what drives this movement or exactly how plate boundaries were created. There are many theories, but none of them completely address all aspects of this activity.

9 How do animals migrate?

Many animals and insects migrate throughout the year in order to escape changing seasonal temperatures and the waning resources that come with it or to find mates. Some of these migrations can reach thousands of kilometers in one direction, so how do they find their way there and back again year after year? Different animals use different navigational tools, including some who are able to tap into the Earth’s magnetic field and use themselves like a compass. However, scientists still don’t know how this trait evolved or how untrained animals know exactly where to go season after season.

10 What is dark energy?

Of all of the great mysteries of science, dark energy might be the most enigmatic of all. While dark matter makes up an estimated 80% of all mass, dark energy is a hypothetical form of energy believed to make up around 70% of all content in the Universe. Dark energy has been implicated as the cause for the expansion of the Universe, though there is still a considerable amount of mystery regarding its supposed properties. First and foremost, what is it even made of? Is dark energy constant, or are there fluctuations throughout the expanse of space? Why does dark energy’s density appear to match the density of regular matter? Can dark energy be reconciled with Einstein’s theory of gravity, or does the theory need to be reevaluated?

TOP 10 EXPENSIVE HOLLYWOOD MOVIES EVER

TOP 10 EXPENSIVE HOLLYWOOD MOVIES EVER

10. King Kong (2005)

Director: Peter Jackson

Cost of production: $250 million USD

No stranger to behemoth budgets thanks to Lord of the Rings, Jackson’s lavish take on the ’30s classic initially had a budget of $150 million, but it climbed higher and higher. Most of the money was spent on Kong himself. What’s more, King Kong gradually became substantially longer than Universal had anticipated and the extra length (mostly due to special effects needed for a convincing 25-foot computer animated gorilla) increased the budget by a third.

The film – given its longer length – was a cinematic risk, requiring the studio to reach for the kind of long-term audience that made hits out of three hour movies like Jackson’s Rings trilogy. Long movies receive far fewer showings per day and therefore, for King Kong to break even at the box office, it was imperative that the film did well. Luckily, when it was released in 2005, the movie made a total of $550 million, becoming the fourth highest film on gross revenue in Universal Pictures history. And the special effects really were fantastic. Unfortunately, when the humans started talking things started to go a little bit off track…Jack Black, really?

What else could you buy for that: Over six Empire State buildings at $40,948,900 USD each to construct.

9. Avatar (2009)

Director: James Cameron

Cost of production: $261 million USD

It’s a well-known fact that movie studios like being creative with their accountancy, to limit the amount of tax they have to pay – the bigger the costs, the lower the tax bill. Avatar was no different. After a directorial run-up lasting 12 years, Cameron took an almighty leap into the third-dimension with his digitally-created new world, hiring WETA for special effects and using super-sleek 3D which took the medium of cinema to the next level. No surprise then, that this movie didn’t come cheap. Ninety hours went into the production of every single frame for the movie, of which there were a whopping 24 per second, creating cutting-edge CGI like none ever seen before.

Let’s not forget the fact that creating a new language and teaching it to over 100 actors, hiring big names and fantastic, well-established scriptwriters, and producing the technology for 3D glasses added to the already huge production costs. And to think that we once hyperventilated with astonishment at the realness of Jurassic Park’s dinosaurs.

What else could you buy for that: 17,411,607 gallons of blue body paint at $14.99 USD a pot

8. Waterworld (1995)

Director: Kevin Reynolds

Cost of production: $271 million USD

Kevin Costner lived on a trimaran in the middle of the ocean, that was once Earth before all the ice caps melted and dry land became a distant memory…Much like Hollywood blockbusters that cost less than $200 million USD. The Costner-starring flick of 1995 was the most expensive movie ever produced, at the time. Costner invested over $20 million of his personal funds into the film for which shooting took place aboard a gigantic 400-foot diameter atoll, specifically built for the production somewhere off the coast of Hawaii. The spectacular, 1000-ton floating set – over a quarter of a mile in circumference – also swallowed a lot of the movie’s budget given that it required aerial filming via seaplanes and helicopters. Not to mention the fact that whoever was on weather lookout duty at the time failed spectacularly in their job – the proof for which came in the form of three huge hurricanes that sank the entire set.

Despite Waterworld’s futuristic setting, critics were by-and-large unimpressed by the wet performances. In fact, it’s probably the most famous flop in recent film history; the post-apocalyptic movie took just $88 million at the US box office, despite it’s crazy production spend.

What else could you buy for that: 2,084,615 inflatable four-person dinghies at $130 USD each.

7. John Carter (2012)

Director: Andrew Stanton

Cost of production: $271 million USD

The cost of John Carter was – with no better way to say it – ridiculous. It left Disney somewhere around $200 million out of pocket, making it the company’s biggest flop of all time. The personal cost of the film also wasn’t so small. Rich Ross – the former chairman of Walt Disney Studios – decided to resign just a month after the movie was released, while Disney lost the rights to produce the rest of Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc’s back catalogue after refusing to produce any John Carter sequels (Disney probably had the right idea on that one…).

What’s more, director Stanton began shooting the movie with Taylor Kitsch as the eponymous lead. But, thanks to various problems in post-production, Stanton was forced to shoot much of the movie twice – which, of course – soon saw the budget spiral out of control. In fact, John Carterwould’ve had to make somewhere around $600 million just to break even. It didn’t even come close. Poor Stanton… Nobody wants to discover their own limitations on such a global stage.

What else could you buy for that: 16,941,176 leather loincloths at $17 USD a shred.

6. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)

Director: David Yates

Cost of production: $275 million USD

White it’s not really surprising that Warner Bros. was willing to put up as many millions as were needed to bring the Harry Potter series to the big screen, the fact that The Half-Blood Prince was the most expensive of the series is. It was the least favoured film by fans and critics alike (yerp, money doesn’t always make a film better), but rumor has it that director Yates initially tried some pretty experimental stuff with the movie, before being forced to scale it back post-production so as not to anger hardcore HP fans.

What’s more, by 2009, the franchise’s stars had already become huge names in Hollywood and their salaries reflected just that. Still, $275 million for a Harry Potter film is probably one of the safest investments Warner Bros. could have made – and the results prove it: $302 million domestic and $632 million overseas for a worldwide total of $934 million.

What else could you buy for that: 1,285,046 annual passes to Orlando’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter at $14 USD a pop.

5. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

Director: Joss Whedon

Cost of production: $280 million USD

This year’s superhero cluster flick – which included everyone from Captain America to Iron Man, to The Hulk, Thor, Falcon, Quicksilver and Black Widow – became the third-highest-grossing film in North America, behind Avatar and Titanic. But, superheroes don’t come cheap. Before production started, multiple members of the Age Of Ultron cast threatened to quit if their contractual demands (read: money) weren’t met, so Marvel had some serious work cut out for them if they wanted all the big names back on board for the Avengers sequel – all of whom were reportedly looking for $5 million on the table and a cut of the post-release profits.

On top of that, there were the far-flung international locations, the drone cameras used for some of the filming, and the CGI to make the titular villain with all the nuances that Whedon wanted to capture. Everyone knows that increased CGI is never a substitute for clean writing, but given that Age Of Ultron brought in almost $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office, that doesn’t seem to matter.

What else could you buy for that: 280,000 drone cameras at $1000 USD each.

4. Tangled (2010)

Director: Nathan Greno, Byron Howard

Cost of production: $281 million USD

Tangled was so expensive mainly because of how long it took to get the story right. It took about ten years of multiple aborted attempts at the movie, each of which got pretty far in before they scrapped everything and started again. Much of the budget included redesigning versions of previously-attempted flick Rapunzel, dating back to 2000, that were never produced. What’s more, extensive research was done to develop the animation process that allowed the CGI to evoke some of the qualities of traditional hand-drawn Disney characters – animating all of that blonde hair must’ve been quite the ordeal.

An entertaining if rather forgettable Disney animation that in no way earned its colossal budget, Tangled eventually bagged a profit when it was released in international theaters, but it’s still pretty mind-boggling how much cash they spent on this one.

What else could you buy for that: 2,810,000,000 crayons for $0.10 USD each.

3. Spider-Man 3 (2007)

Director: Sam Raimi

Cost of production: $293 million USD

When Spider-Man was released in 2002, it almost singlehandedly laid the groundwork for the current superhero boom. But, then they just started throwing money at the franchise…And unfortunately, making expensive, flagship superhero sequels is no small or simple feat. Production for the movie dragged on into late summer where it had been scheduled to conclude in June, pushing up the costs dramatically. On top of that, there was the huge cost of CGI, the web-slinging set pieces, the star salaries and – of course – the marketing and promotion campaign costs.

After Spidey 2 had a hard time convincing fans that an ageing arachnid fan was still living in a single bedsit and popping round to his Aunt May’s house for some home-cooking before climbing into the old red-blue Spandex for the evening, the studio probably didn’t have much of a choice on the whopping marketing budget. And, unfortunately, despite Spider-Man 2 costing $250 million to produce and Spider-Man 3 even more, the critical reception just didn’t pay off.

What else could you buy for that: 7,325,000 bungee ropes, at $40 USD a go.

2. Titanic (1997)

Director: James Cameron

Cost of production: $294 million USD

The cost to construct the Titanic set was somewhere between $120 to $150 million alone (in 1997 dollars). For that amount of money, you might feel ripped off with anything less than the “ship of dreams.” Remember that grand staircase scene, where the water comes crashing in as Rose and Jack try to escape? It only had one shot, because the set and furnishings were so hugely expensive to produce there was no room for error. And then there were the reams of other convincing special effects – in one apparently uninterrupted shot, we saw the ship from bow to stern, with flags flying and smoke coiling from its stacks, and on the deck hundreds of passengers strolling, children running, servants serving, and so on.

And it paid off. Titanic made its huge production costs part of its marketing campaign, promoting the rich value of the movie like none other at the box office; it went down swimmingly (pun intended). Despite it’s $294 million price tag, Roger Ebert described the film as “value for money” – every cent of that budget spent on production flickers on screen.

What else could you buy for that: 6,533,333 life jackets at $45 USD each.

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)

Director: Rob Marshall

Cost of production: $397 million USD

Despite the very agreeable box office returns, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was no cheap date. 2007 and 2006’s Gore Verbinski-directed Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End cost $263 million and $341 million, respectively, with On Stranger Tides landing a slot as the most expensive long shot – with Jack Sparrow and Barbossa’s quest to find the elusive fountain of youth costing nearly $400 million.

Regardless of the huge production costs (Depp’s payment was an estimated $55,000,000…Well, hey, someone has to pay for that accessorising) the box office-busting Pirates of the Caribbean flicks have been the most extraordinary cash cow, and since the first time we saw Johnny Depp parading around with beaded dreads and guy-liner in 2003, the Disney execs behind the franchise have been simultaneously wading around in gold up to their armpits.

What else could you buy for that amount: 24,812,500 kohl eye pencils at $16 USD a pop.
